THE UNTAMED EYE

Stephanie Pfriender Stylander_The Untamed Eye

Evocative photographs capturing sweeping, cinematic fashion stories and intimate portraits of celebrities, all tinged with the photographer's gritty realism. Big closeups, grainy film, deep dark-lined eyes, creased foreheads and dusty landscapes seem sensual and erotic. From a very young, unknown Kate Moss to rock legend Keith Richards, "my important pictures happen when I get into a 'dance' with the subject, this is the part that is untamed, and for me the most interesting." French Vogue, "intense and poetic", Spanish Vogue, "iconic imagery, capturing what is hidden behind the character."

Published MW Editions, Printed in Italy, 2018

Spoken to Kenneth Dickerman at The Washington Post: On working as a photographer during the ’90s, Pfriender Stylander wrote: “We were all on the road, there was a fantastic restlessness, we were young and in need of expression. The great fashion and creative directors let you roam, they gave you twenty pages to express your vision — it was a complete creative playground where we could be rebellious, and the word compromise was not spoken, not even thought about.”

i-D ‘These photos will transport you to the atmosphere of the Nouvelle Vogue. Photographer Stephanie Pfriender Stylander shot in New York, Paris and Milan thought the 1990’s. Her shots return the most radical essence of a decade that has taken the rules of fashion, overturned them and then wrote completely new ones. Her photographic archive of the period is an exemplary collection of the iconic celebrities of the times and of those who were crossing the threshold of fame at that time, wisely intercepted with foresight. In 2018, Stephanie collected these and other photos of hers in the monograph, The Untamed Eye, giving us back a dip in the middle of the last years of twentieth century fashion.’
